So, Lexi, you want to build me a nesting box, do you? That is just so cool! But do you know what, Lexi? I'm afraid we Great Horned Owls are one of the few species of owls that don't have much use for a nesting box, really. (I get claustrophobic just thinking about it.) But I'll tell you what we DO like, Lexi: We like nesting platforms that are about 2' by 2' in size and that are raised at least 14' into the air. (Does that sound doable?) Of course, the platform should be in a nice woody area, surrounded by a few evergreens so that everyone and his brother can't see what we're up to in the privacy of our own nest! (Speaking of which, there should not be a lot of humans passing through the area, anyway. ) Oh, and find a wooded area that's near an open field so that we can use these sharp eyes of ours to locate the rodents that it contains. I mean, what's the point of us having super eyesight if we're constantly surrounded by tree branches? (Nothing personal, but we see 7 times clearer than you humans do.) In other words, you've
got your work cut out for you, Lexi. Just be sure you get advice
from a local owl professional before you set to work. Meanwhile,
I've been doing a little "surfing" of my own, and I've
discovered some links to sites that can tell you more about attracting
owls to your neighborhood and building platforms for us and so
forth. (I tell you, this Internet is wonderful, isn't it, Lexi?
When I was a fledgling 10 years ago, we owls had never even HEARD
of the Internet -- and now all 19 species in North America have
their own home pages!)
